The new Primate of Australia, the Rt Revd Dr Mark Short, has underscored the importance of hope in the life and mission of the Church, saying “the language of hope speaks powerfully” in today’s challenging world.
Dr Short, who is also the Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, visited the Anglican Communion Office (ACO) on 14 January, accompanied by his wife, Monica. During the visit, the couple spent time with ACO staff in fellowship, prayer and open conversation.
A roundtable discussion during the visit focused on several key issues shaping the Anglican Church in Australia and beyond. Among the topics explored were the national outreach initiative ‘Hope25’, ministry and mission among First Nations peoples, and reflections on the impact of the Bondi Beach attacks on communities and the Church’s pastoral response.
Sharing his vision for the wider Anglican family, Dr Short said he hoped the Anglican Communion would be “hopeful and hope-filled” as it faces global and local challenges. He also outlined his mission priorities as he begins his term as Primate, emphasising witness, compassion and renewed engagement with communities.
The visit highlighted the importance of shared prayer and dialogue across the Anglican Communion, as leaders work together to offer hope, healing and faithful service in an uncertain world.
