ZCC Selects 50 Leaders For Ecumenical Leadership Academy 2026

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has selected 50 leaders from across Zimbabwe for the 2026 Ecumenical Leadership Development Academy (ELDA).

One of the selected participants, Mairosi Watungwa, who is also the Cranborne UMC CM Chair and Cranborne Ecumenical Secretary, said he is honoured to be part of the programme.

"Honoured to be part of the 2026 Ecumenical Leadership Development Academy (ELDA) convened by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC). We had virtual learning sessions now as we move into the in-residence phase in Harare," Watungwa said.

He expressed gratitude for being among the few chosen for the prestigious programme.

ZCC Joins Global Church Leaders In Thailand For World Council Of Churches Meeting

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has joined global church leaders in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the 2026 World Council of Churches (WCC) Joint Biennial Meeting of Commissions and Reference Groups on Life, Justice and Peace.

The high-level meeting, led by WCC General Secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, is running from 4 to 10 October and has brought together church leaders and practitioners from across the world at a time of armed conflict, growing inequality, ecological crisis and threats to human dignity.

ZCC is being represented by its Head of Programs for Humanitarian Services and Diakonia, Ms Maria T. Dendere, who is attending both on behalf of the organisation and as a member of the Ecumenical Diakonia Reference Group (EDRG).

At the centre of the discussions is one question: how are churches called to witness together today?

According to organisers, delegates are revisiting the ethical foundations of ecumenical social thought, drawn from more than a century of church engagement with society, and discussing principles that still hold in a fractured, fast-changing world and which need renewing.

The programme also includes an outreach component, with delegates visiting local organisations working on migration, health, refugees and climate change.

The visits have shown how communities and partners in Thailand are responding to challenges that many of the communities served by ZCC in Zimbabwe also face, providing ideas and possible partnerships.

"This event produced a shared reading of the signs of the times, renewed guiding principles for the churches' public witness, a common conference message, and stronger cooperation among WCC commissions, reference groups and ecumenical partners," ZCC said in a statement.

For ZCC, the meeting is an opportunity to share lessons from its work with communities, build partnerships with ecumenical partners worldwide, and bring home ideas that will strengthen its climate resilience, humanitarian, development, peacebuilding, and justice efforts.

The meeting is expected to produce a common conference message and renewed guiding principles for the churches' public witness.

4,000 Worshippers Flood Harare Gardens For Glorious 18th Call To Worship

Staff Writer – Harare Gardens was transformed into a sanctuary of praise on Saturday, 3 October 2026, as an estimated 4,000 worshippers converged for the 18th edition of CALL TO WORSHIP.

Held under the theme "Ishe Ngavavongwe – Let the Lord Be Exalted," the interdenominational gathering once again proved its place as one of Zimbabwe's most powerful nights of worship, uniting believers across denominations.

The day's programme started with an intensive Worship Workshop that drew over 80 worship leaders, musicians and choir directors. The session was led by Blessing Jeduthan, Oncemore Six and Pastor Charlotte Pike, who imparted both practical skills and spiritual insight for effective ministry.

As evening fell, the main celebration began with a stirring opening ministration from the AFM Zimbabwe Choir, setting the tone for the night. The Call to Worship Choir followed with a soul-lifting performance, beautifully complemented by a captivating saxophone instrumental that left the crowd spellbound.

Blessing Jeduthan then took to the stage with an anointed ministration that ushered congregants into deep worship, before Oncemore Six brought the night to a powerful climax with an energetic, spirit-filled set that had the entire garden on its feet in praise.

Founders Pastors Phillip and Charlotte Pike shared heartfelt exhortations, reminding the gathering that worship goes beyond an event — it is a lifestyle.

Free and open to all, the night drew glowing reactions, with many describing it as "life-changing," "heaven on earth" and "a night I will never forget."

With the 18th edition now concluded in glory, organisers have confirmed preparations are already underway for the 19th edition.

Churches Call For Prayers As 8,500 Families Lose Roofs In Masvingo Hailstorm

Staff Writer -

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ) has issued an appeal for prayer and support after a devastating hailstorm left a trail of destruction in Masvingo Province.

In a statement released on Friday, the EFZ said the disaster struck on Monday, 5 October 2026.

"On Monday 5 October 2026, Masvingo Province was struck by a catastrophic and severe hailstorm that left widespread destruction," the EFZ said.

The fellowship said thousands of families were left homeless after the storm ripped roofs off houses.

"Reports indicate that 8,500 families had their roofs completely blown off and severe damage to property, businesses, vehicles and infrastructure was also experienced," the statement read.

The EFZ called on Christians and churches across the country to stand with the affected communities.

"Let's join together to stand in prayer with Masvingo province, families and churches," the church body said.

Gweru Student Shot Dead, Four Others Locked In Room With Body

By A Correspondent - What was supposed to be a quick trip to town to pick up a mattress turned into a nightmare for Senga KMP caretaker Blessing Nkomo, who came back with police to find four students locked in a room with the body of their friend.

The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Lisedi Nkomo, a Level Four First Semester student at Midlands State University, who was allegedly shot in the forehead at around 5:30PM on Thursday at House Number 1082, Senga KMP, Gweru.

Blessing said she had left home in the afternoon when she received a call from one of the children at the property checking if she was safe and whether she was in her room.

"I was in town when a child who stays here called and asked me whether I was safe and whether I was in my room. I told her that I was not at home," she said.

She told the child to check what was happening. The child then found some doors open and a man in a hooded jacket moving around the yard. When students went out to see what was going on, the man allegedly threatened to shoot them.

"He took their phones and ordered them to get inside. Four of the students were forced into one room, the same room where my tenant was shot. He locked them inside and threw their phones into a bathtub," Blessing said.

The news that the phones had been thrown away made her panic.

"When I heard that the phones had been thrown into the bathtub, I realised that things were not right at home. I told my husband that we should forget about the mattress and concentrate on getting help because I feared for the children's safety," she said.

ZCC Stands With Masvingo After Devastating Hailstorm

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches says it stands in solidarity with the people of Masvingo Province following the devastating hailstorm of 5 October 2026.

In a statement, ZCC General Secretary Rev Wilfred Dimingu said, "Our hearts go out to families whose homes have been damaged and whose belongings and livelihoods have been lost."

He said the church is concerned about families now living under damaged roofs.

"We are deeply concerned for those now living under damaged roofs or behind shattered windows, as well as for communities facing interruptions to electricity, water and other essential services. We hold every affected person in prayer during this distressing time," said Dimingu.

Rev Dimingu said he acknowledges the declaration of a state of disaster and the ongoing relief efforts.

He said, "As assessments continue, the immediate priority must be safe shelter, food, clean water, medical care and the restoration of essential services."

He added that assistance should be based on need.

"Assistance should reach people based on need, with particular attention to children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and families whose homes are exposed to further rain," he said.

He called for support from churches and well-wishers.

"We call on our member churches, congregations, partners, businesses and all people of goodwill to support the response in coordination with local authorities and disaster management structures. Recovery will require sustained support after the first emergency has passed, including repairs to homes, schools, health facilities and livelihoods," said Dimingu.

He had a message for the affected people.

"To the people of Masvingo: you are not forgotten. The damage is great, but you do not face it alone. Scripture reminds us that God is our refuge and strength. May that hope be made visible through the care we offer one another and the work we undertake together," he said.

"We pray for strength and comfort for all affected families, wisdom for those leading the response, and a recovery in which no community is left behind," said Dimingu.

God Answers Prayer In Mhene: From Crocodile Tears To Living Water

Praise be to God! What the enemy meant for evil, God has turned for good in Mhene Village.

For years, our mothers and sisters in Mhene walked in fear to the Msengezi River, because there was no other water. Between January and April this year, four precious lives were lost to crocodiles. But the Lord saw their tears.

Through the love of Christ, the Seventh-day Adventist Church came not just with the Word, but with works.

It started with an evangelistic campaign by Guruve District last year. The church raised what it could for a borehole. Then God sent His servant, Dr. Alaisa Mbiriri, who came to preach but was moved with compassion — just as Jesus was — when he saw the suffering of the people. He became the vessel to bring sponsors for the borehole and the beautiful Anouya Garden Project.

At the handover, NZC Ministerial Director Pastor Musiiwa reminded us of true Christianity:

"God is looking for those who are concerned about other people's problems," he said. "The church finds joy in satisfying people's needs."

Pastor Chigonero called it "Christ's method" — to first meet the physical needs of the people, just as Jesus fed the 5,000 before preaching to them.

And the joy on the face of Village Head Sabhuku Mhene said it all:

"It is my prayer that this borehole never dries up."

Indeed, it will not dry up, for this is living water from God. The women of Mhene will never again have to choose between thirst and death. Children will drink safely. Families will grow vegetables from the garden and have life more abundantly.

This is what the Gospel looks like when it leaves the pulpit and goes to the river.

To God be the glory!

Prophet Uebert Angel Mourns "Brother" Wicknell Chivayo

By A Correspondent-

Spirit Embassy leader Prophet Uebert Angel has paid an emotional tribute to businessman Wicknell Chivayo who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday night alongside his wife Lulu Muteke and three others.

In a heartfelt statement, Angel said he was struggling to come to terms with the loss of a man he considered family.

"I struggle to find the right words to express the pain of losing a man who was far more than a generous giver. He became my family, someone whose presence, kindness, friendship & love left a lasting mark on my life, my family & the lives of so many people around the world," he said.

"He left this world alongside his beloved wife, Lulu, the two pilots & his wife's aide. 4 precious lives were suddenly taken, leaving behind families and loved ones who are now trying to make sense of a loss that is almost impossible to comprehend. My heart goes out to every family affected by this tragedy," he said.

Angel said he was holding onto his faith despite the pain.

"But even in the middle of this pain, I choose to hold on to Jesus. I choose to believe His promises when my heart is broken. I choose to believe we did not lose these souls, Heaven gained them. That truth does not mean we don't grieve. We grieve because we loved them & also because they mattered. We feel this emptiness because their presence meant so much to us. But our faith reminds us that death does not have the final word," he said.

He said Chivayo will be remembered more for his generosity than his wealth.

"When I think about him, what I will remember most is not simply what he had, but what he chose to do with what he had. He understood that true wealth is measured by the lives we touch, people we lift & the difference we make while we are here," he said.

"He gave millions in support of the work of the Lord, helping to advance its mission, strengthen its ministry & enable us to reach people who needed hope, encouragement, and practical support. He didn't stop at the church, he gave to individuals, families, communities & causes that mattered to him. Many people benefited from his kindness, often in ways that may never become known publicly," he said.

"For me personally, his loss carries a different kind of pain because he was not simply someone I knew through his generosity. He was family. We shared moments, conversations, dreams, laughter, & memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. My kids called him UNCLE, & he truly became their uncle. He was involved in their lives, cared about what they were doing, celebrated their achievements. He was part of their world. That is something I will forever be grateful for," he said.

"There are people whose names are remembered because of what they achieved. Others are remembered because of what they accumulated. But Wicknell will be remembered because of what he did. His life reminds us that whatever God places in our hands can become a blessing to others when we are willing to give. His generosity helped build, support, encourage, and transform lives. And his impact will continue through the people and institutions he supported, especially the Church that he believed in & generously stood behind," he said.

Angel said his family is mourning all five victims.

"Today, my family and I mourn not only the loss of a brother and his dear wife, Lulu, but the loss of someone who became deeply woven into our family story. We mourn the two pilots and his wife's aide as well, and we remember the families who are now carrying their own unbearable grief. Five lives. Five stories. So many people left behind to mourn. We may never fully understand why their journey had to end when it did. I don't have the answers. But I know Jesus. And I know that even when we cannot understand His ways, we can still trust His heart," he said.

"So I choose to be grateful for the years we had. Grateful for the memories. Grateful for the conversations. Grateful for the laughter. Grateful for the lives he touched. Grateful for the millions he gave to the work of God. And most of all, grateful that God allowed him to become part of my life and part of my family. There are moments now when I will think, I need to tell Uncle something, and then I will remember that he is no longer here. That is the kind of pain that words cannot explain. But then I remind myself that he is not lost. He has gone ahead. And because of Jesus, I believe there will be a day when we meet again. So although my heart is broken, my faith remains. Although I am grieving, I still have hope. Although I cannot understand why this happened, I still trust Jesus," he said.

"For me, he will always be remembered as more than a man who gave millions to the Church. He was a man who gave from his heart. He was my brother. He was my children's Uncle. He was family. He will never be forgotten," Angel said.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

"To his family & to the families of the two pilots & his wife's aide, I extend my deepest condolences. May Jesus Himself comfort you in the places where words cannot reach. May He hold you through the tears, the silence, the questions, & the memories. Find comfort in knowing that the lives they lived mattered, the love they gave mattered, & us they touched will carry their memory forward. Today, we mourn because we loved. But we also rejoice because we know where our hope lies. We did not lose them. Heaven gained them. And one day, by the grace of God, we will see them again. Until then, rest well, my brother. Rest well, Uncle. Rest well, Lulu. And may the two pilots and Lulu's aide rest well," he said.

The delegation also visited the rehabilitated Sonopi Dip Tank, which continues to service more than 2,000 cattle from surrounding villages, highlighting the long-term impact of the partnership.
