ZCC Calls for Unity and Water Justice as Zimbabwe Marks Africa Day 2026

ARARE — The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has urged Zimbabweans and Africans across the continent to recommit to unity, justice, and equitable access to water and sanitation as the continent marks Africa Day on 25 May 2026.

In a statement released for the commemorations, the ecumenical body said Africa Day is a moment to celebrate the continent’s heritage, diversity, resilience, and shared future.

“As an ecumenical body, we celebrate the spirit of unity, solidarity, and fellowship across denominations and borders, recognising that together we can contribute to an Africa marked by peace, justice, dignity, and shared prosperity,” the ZCC said.

This year’s continental theme focuses on ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems for all. The ZCC said access to clean water and dignified sanitation is “essential to health, justice, human dignity, and flourishing communities.”

The council linked the current call to last year’s focus on reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent, noting that addressing historical wrongs must include tackling systemic inequalities that block access to life-sustaining resources.

“We further acknowledge the African Union’s declaration of 2026–2036 as the Decade of Reparative Justice for Africans and People of African Descent, a renewed continental commitment to healing historical injustices, restoring dignity, and advancing equitable and inclusive development for all,” the statement read.

Closing with a call to action, the ZCC said: “May we continue building bridges of peace and working together for the Africa we want – united, peaceful, just, and flourishing.”

The council quoted Ephesians 4:3, saying, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace,” and wished Zimbabweans a “Happy Africa Day.”
