Christian Unity More Urgent Than Ever in a Divided World – Bishop Innes

In a world increasingly marked by division and polarisation, the Church’s calling to witness to unity has never been more vital, according to the Rt Revd Dr Robert Innes, Bishop of Gibraltar and diocesan bishop of the Diocese in Europe.

Speaking during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Bishop Innes reflected on the growing importance of visible and practical unity among Christians, stressing that unity is not only something to be spoken about, but something to be lived out.

“In a world which is polarised and divided, the Church’s mission to make known its unity feels ever more urgent and important,” Bishop Innes said.

As Co-Chair of the International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM), Bishop Innes is closely involved in ecumenical efforts that seek to strengthen relationships between Christian traditions, particularly between Anglicans and Roman Catholics. He emphasised that real progress in Christian unity comes through shared action and cooperation, rather than statements alone.

Reflecting on the theme of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Bishop Innes noted that practical witness is essential. “With Christian unity, actions speak louder than words,” he said, highlighting the need for churches to work together in service, mission and reconciliation.

He added that when Christians demonstrate unity through compassion, justice and shared mission, they offer a powerful counter-message to a fractured world. Such unity, he said, can become a sign of hope not only for the Church, but for society as a whole.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity brings together churches and Christian organisations across denominations to pray, reflect and act together for greater unity. It is supported by bodies such as the Diocese in Europe, the World Council of Churches, and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

Bishop Innes’ message underscores the belief that Christian unity is not an optional extra, but a vital witness in challenging times — one that calls believers to move beyond words and embody unity in everyday life.
