By Staff Writer -The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has joined the rest of the continent in marking the Day of the African Child 2026, urging governments, communities and stakeholders to prioritise access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene for all children.
Commemorations this year are being held under the theme, "Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa."
In a statement, the ZCC reflected on the legacy of the Soweto children whose courage continues to inspire generations across Africa, while stressing the need to uphold the rights and dignity of every child.
The church body said every child deserves access to clean water, safe sanitation facilities and proper hygiene, describing them as critical requirements for healthy growth and development.
Quoting Matthew 19:14, the ZCC said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these," and called for collective efforts to ensure that no child is excluded from opportunities that promote their wellbeing.
The council also highlighted its ongoing commitment to empowering young people through its Youth Leadership Development Programme (YLDP) and by integrating youth participation across its various initiatives.
According to the ZCC, young people continue to play an important role in advancing peacebuilding, governance, climate justice and social transformation within communities.
The organisation encouraged children and youth across Africa to remain agents of positive change, urging them to embrace values of peace, integrity, innovation and hope.
"Continue to be ambassadors of peace, integrity, innovation, and hope. Use your God-given talents and gifts to transform your communities and our continent," the ZCC said.
