When the granary is empty, a mother’s heart is heavy.
In Zimbabwe’s rural communities, where erratic rainfall and poor harvests have left many families food insecure, the church has remained a steadfast pillar of support. Through the Humanitarian Food Assistance Program, spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and supported by Canadian Foodgrains Bank and The United Church of Canada, thousands of households have found relief during the lean season.
Among the 12,006 participants in Gutu and Bikita Districts are women whose daily battles are often unseen—mothers and caregivers who stand at the heart of their homes, ensuring children are fed despite overwhelming odds. For them, each food basket received is more than just maize, oil, and beans. It is hope. It is dignity. It is a chance to sleep at night without the weight of hunger clouding tomorrow.
These women, often the first to rise and last to sleep, have become symbols of resilience in their communities. As climate change continues to threaten traditional farming and food sources, their strength and adaptability underscore why supporting such humanitarian initiatives is more important than ever.
The smiles of these mothers—bright and relieved—are a testament to what compassion, faith, and action can achieve. They remind us that church-led programs are not only about providing food; they are about restoring life, one basket at a time.
We celebrate their strength and the collective commitment to walk with the vulnerable. This is the Church in action—delivering more than aid, delivering hope.
