When the preacher gets sick

By Rev Kenneth Mtata

Today's readings

Psalm 126;

Isaiah 43:8-15;

Philippians 2:25-3:1

Verse of the day

"He was indeed so ill that he nearly died. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, so that I would not have one sorrow after another"

(Philippians 2:27).

Epaphroditus was Paul's special partner in ministry. He called him "my brother and co-worker and fellow soldier" (v 25). He was very valuable in Paul's ministry but also risked "his life to make up for those services that you could not give me" (v.30). What were those service? These could have included carrying important messages to the churches as well as supporting him in some administrative work.

Epaphroditus was very sick and Paul was worried. If he died, Paul's ministry would be affected and the churches would be attacked loss.

I have been sick this week and nearly could share this message as I felt weak and not motivated. But I thought I just force myself to say three things.

First, pray for the well-being of those who minister to you.  Their physical, mental and spiritual condition has a bearing on the quality of their ministry to you.

Second,  ministry is generally a sacrifice. But sometimes it is risky.  Pray for the security of those who faithfully proclaim the word.

Third, when you get ministry of the word that speaks to your life, react tonit by saying Amen or anything that confirms to the preacher that he or she is communicating.

May God keep you in good health as you draw from his fresh word every morning.

Amen.
