LIVING TO KILL
When people heard of Jesus' arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see to see Lazarus, the man that Jesus raised from the dead.
Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, for it was because of him that many people had deserted them and believed in Jesus. (Mark 11:9-11)
What a lack of appreciation for life and what hatred!. Let us understand this together; Lazarus had been raised from death by Jesus. This is Lazarus, brother to Mary, the woman who anointed Jesus in appreciation. The man who had hosted Jesus for dinner was Simon whom Jesus had healed of leprosy. Appreciate this chain of Jesus' acts of goodwill to the people, as part of his ministry. Sadly, the world did not appreciate any of that.
Now Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus's home town. The fact that Jesus and Lazarus were there together attracted many people to converge. The leading priests were not pleased with the picture.
They felt deserted and losing their vote and value. Their response to that was a decision to kill Lazarus for being the centre of attraction. They wanted to thwart Jesus' mission, by killing not only Lazarus, the living miracle of Jesus' power, but also, later, Jesus himself.
Jesus was right in his prayer, later, to say they did not know what they were doing. There are things that you may do out of emotion or hate, knowing not what you are doing. Come back to your senses and, God will forgive you and forget all about it. This Easter, there is a fresh page of life from which you can start writing your new found life story. Amen
