By A Correspondent - The Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Government, and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China have joined forces to provide humanitarian assistance to Zimbabweans returning from South Africa.
On 10 July 2026, ZCC General Secretary Rev. Wilfred Dimingu led the handover of food and household supplies to returnees in Bulawayo. The event was attended by Hon. Judith Ncube, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, reflecting what both parties described as a strong Church-Government partnership.
The donation included mealie meal, cooking oil, rice, flour, sugar, peanut butter, blankets, buckets, bathing and washing soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary wear, diapers, children’s clothing, tissue paper and other basic necessities. Solar lights donated by the Chinese Embassy were also part of the package.
ZCC expressed appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for its contribution toward supporting returnees.
In his remarks, Rev. Dimingu thanked Government for creating space for the Church to serve alongside national efforts.
“As the Church, we are the first to kneel and the last to stand,” he said. “The Church remains present before, during, and after times of crisis.”
He urged all ZCC member churches to mobilize resources to ensure every returning Zimbabwean receives support.
“This is an opportunity for Zimbabweans to rediscover themselves as one people, united in faith, love, and shared responsibility as they rebuild lives and strengthen communities together,” Rev. Dimingu added.
He closed by quoting scripture: _“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”_ Matthew 25:35 (NIV)
ZCC said the intervention forms part of its commitment to serve vulnerable communities with compassion and dignity, while complementing Government efforts to give returnees a dignified welcome home.
