Harare – The Union for the Development of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe Africa (UDACIZA) last week held a preparatory meeting with the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) to explore possible areas of collaboration during the upcoming Commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), which will be held in Chitungwiza.

The strategic meeting brought together faith-based leaders, government officials, and representatives from partner organizations, including the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ), Trocaire, UNFPA Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, the Zimbabwe Association of Church-Related Hospitals (ZACH), and the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC).

Speaking during the discussions, UDACIZA representatives highlighted the church’s central role in combating gender-based violence. “As the church, we have a moral and spiritual duty to denounce abuse and protect women and girls,” said one UDACIZA leader. “Our message from the pulpit must be clear—violence has no place in our homes, churches, or communities.”

ZGC officials applauded the partnership, saying collaboration with religious institutions was key to transforming mindsets. “Faith-based organizations play an influential role in shaping values and behavior,” said a ZGC spokesperson. “Working hand in hand with the church will help us address harmful practices and create safer spaces for women and children.”

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign observed annually from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day.

A representative from UNFPA Zimbabwe emphasized the importance of unity in tackling GBV, saying, “Ending gender-based violence requires everyone’s participation—churches, government, and communities alike. Together, we can build a society that upholds the dignity and rights of every person.”

UDACIZA and ZGC are expected to conduct community awareness programs, joint dialogues, and prayer sessions in the lead-up to the official commemorations.

The meeting concluded with a collective call for action under the hashtags #StopGenderBasedViolence, #ProtectWomensRights, and #16DaysOfActivism.
