In a disturbing domestic incident in Gwayi, a 45-year-old man has been fined by the Hwange Magistrates’ Court after he deliberately set fire to his wife’s clothes and household items in anger over her decision to attend church, leaving their children at home unattended.
The court heard that the incident took place on March 2, 2025, at around 2 PM. Upon returning home, the man discovered that his 44-year-old wife had gone to church and left the children alone. In a fit of rage, he gathered her clothes, some baby garments, and 20 kilograms of wheat from the kitchen, placed them in the yard, and set them alight before heading off to work.
When the wife returned home around 4 PM, their daughter explained what had happened. She reported the matter to the police, leading to her husband’s arrest. The estimated value of the destroyed property was USD 60.
The court imposed a USD 100 fine on the man, with the alternative of three months’ imprisonment if the fine is not paid. Additionally, a one-month prison sentence was suspended on the condition that he pays restitution for the destroyed items.
