_"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock"_ (Matt 7:24-25). In this parable Jesus describes the storms of life as a matter of fact. He doesn't say "If" those storms come. So we can be sure that our life's foundation will be tested. There's no getting around it. The question is whether the foundation will stand up to the test. Have we chosen to build on a firm foundation, or not? If our spiritual houses, which are being built in our hearts and minds, are solidly based on Jesus and His Word, we can have complete confidence that no matter what happens, our souls are secure and fortified. This means grounding ourselves in Christ every day and making wise choices through the guidance of the Holy Spirit before the storms come. Only in Him can we be assured that our foundation is rock-solid.
Jesus' point of difference between the wise and the foolish man is what you do with the words He says. Palestine is naturally a land of hills and mountains as well as hot sand. The Jordan river swelled to dangerous levels every year and so everyone knew to expect floods, and rocks to build on were common and readily available - they weren't hard to find. Jesus tells this story after He has just given His listeners lots of clear teaching which He knows some will take and some will leave; and we have the Bible more accessible than ever as well as all the other ways God reveals Himself. A fool in the Biblical sense isn't just someone who doesn't know things, or have access to wisdom, it's someone who repeatedly turns away from the information and wisdom available to them, who will not learn from their mistakes - they have chosen foolishness, not the other way round. Obedience grows with practice and trust grows with experience. Ongoing obedience allows us to see the result of doing it God's way. A secret to a rock-solid life.
