y Dorcas Moyo – Genesis 39:7–8
When Potiphar saw that Joseph was a faithful and hardworking servant, his wife began to notice his potential and started seeing him as a “quality boyfriend.” The Bible says, “Now Joseph was well-built and handsome” (verse 6). Then verse 7 continues, “After a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, ‘Come to bed with me.’” Oh my goodness—this woman!
This issue has caused serious problems in many homes and has even led some families to stop employing domestic helpers. In some households, fathers refuse to accept a maid brought home by the family. Others now look for helpers who are considered less attractive, because some men quickly turn a presentable maid into a nearby “girlfriend.” Oh dear! In some homes there are school leavers—young men who look like they might start trouble because they have developed feelings for “sister.” What exactly has the spirit of Potiphar’s wife done? Mothers, even in church, you find this spirit moving from seat to seat, from church member to gardener. Oh my! The spirit of Potiphar’s wife—may it leave people’s lives. Let us live uprightly.
Respect those who work in your homes. Give honor to those you work with. A girlfriend and a maid are not the same thing. Remember that you are taking someone else’s child into your care. A secretary is not a “company wife,” manager. Elder, be calm—a fellow passenger is not a travel wife. Pastor, be careful—girls in Praise and Worship and women in the church are not “incentive wives” for doing God’s work, do you hear? Control your eyes! Let me stop here—this message has touched many.
Blessings
