Faith in Action: ZCC Strengthens Community Resilience in Gutu and Bikita

By Staff Writer

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) recently convened Inception Meetings in Gutu and Bikita districts to launch the second year of the Scaling Up Resilience Program (SURP). Rooted in the biblical call to be stewards of creation, this three-year initiative seeks to empower communities to withstand the challenges of climate change and recurring shocks.

Supported by The United Church of Canada (UCC), the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), and the Government of Canada, SURP has already brought tangible transformation in its first year of implementation. District Development Coordinators, government representatives, and community leaders joined in celebrating testimonies of hope—families recording improved harvests, increased use of small grains, and diversified sources of income.

The program’s holistic approach, which promotes conservation agriculture, gender equality, and community-based disaster risk reduction, is not only strengthening food security but also affirming the dignity of vulnerable households. These efforts echo Christ’s teaching in John 10:10: *“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”*

Stakeholders commended ZCC for faithfully walking alongside communities, ensuring that resilience is not merely about survival but about thriving in harmony with God’s creation. As SURP enters its second year, its mission remains clear— to integrate gender justice, climate-smart agriculture, livelihood strengthening, and disaster preparedness in ways that honor both God and humanity.

ZCC extends heartfelt gratitude to its funding partners and the government line ministries for their collaboration. Together, in the spirit of Christian solidarity, they are sowing seeds of hope and resilience, ensuring that the most vulnerable are empowered to flourish despite the storms of climate change.
