Chitungwiza – Hundreds of Christians gathered at Manyame Bridge yesterday for a powerful prayer vigil organised by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), calling for divine intervention and urgent action to curb Zimbabwe’s spiralling road carnage.
The solemn ceremony was held at the very site where 17 people tragically lost their lives in a recent accident that shocked the nation. Attendees, drawn from Local Ecumenical Fellowships, stood in solidarity with the victims’ families and all those affected by Zimbabwe’s worsening road safety crisis.
The ZCC said the gathering was more than just a moment of mourning—it was a public appeal to both God and the government for protection on the country’s highways.
“As road carnage continues to claim innocent lives, we come before God to seek divine intervention for the safety of all road users,” the Church said in a statement. “We reaffirm our commitment to prayer, advocacy, and national engagement to address this ongoing tragedy.”
The prayer session was supported by several local and international organisations including Christian Aid, Brot für die Welt, and the NCA - Advocacy Programme for Africa, reflecting a growing ecumenical concern over the deadly state of the nation’s roads.
Partners such as the World Council of Churches, Zimcodd, Community Podium, and media outlets like NashTV Zimbabwe, Star FM, and the Sunday Mail also lent their voices to the campaign for safer roads.
The Manyame Bridge prayer vigil is one of several community-led efforts urging authorities to strengthen enforcement of road safety laws, invest in infrastructure, and promote a culture of responsible driving across Zimbabwe.
As Zimbabweans continue to grieve lives lost in preventable road crashes, the Church has positioned itself as both a spiritual and civic voice demanding accountability and reform.
