 Debt Justice is a Gospel Demand—Rev Cele Calls for Biblical Economic Reform at Mutare Conference



Mutare, July 8 — In a powerful theological address at the opening of the Debt Conference held in Mutare, Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) Supervisory Council Member and Chairperson of the Economic Justice Commission, Reverend Cele, called for bold steps toward economic justice, guided by biblical principles of Jubilee, restoration, and equity.

Quoting from Leviticus 25:8–10 and Isaiah 61:1–2, Rev. Cele invoked the ancient biblical tradition of Jubilee as a theological foundation for modern debt cancellation and economic transformation. “The Year of Jubilee was God's own socio-economic reset button,” Rev Cele said. “It was a sacred call to liberate, to forgive, and to restore. If we claim to follow the Gospel, we cannot ignore the cries of the oppressed, the indebted, and the landless.”

He emphasized that Zimbabwe’s mounting debt crisis is not only an economic challenge but also a moral and spiritual concern. “In Scripture, debts are forgiven, slaves are released, and land is returned. This is not charity—it is justice rooted in God’s design for society,” Rev Cele declared.

Criticizing the tendency of the powerful to ignore the suffering of the poor, he warned, “The privileged often forget the cries of the classless. But God does not. The Gospel compels us to remember, to act, and to restore.”

Rev. Cele's reflections positioned debt justice not as a political preference but a theological imperative. He argued that true national development will only be achieved if Zimbabwe embraces debt models that are fair, inclusive,
