Zimbabwe continues to grapple with a high maternal mortality rate, currently ranked among the top five countries in the SADC region. According to the 2024 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS), the country records a staggering 363 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
In response to this critical health challenge, the Zimbabwe Association of Church Related Hospitals (ZACH), in collaboration with various stakeholders including the Ministry of Health and Child Care and community-based organizations, is spearheading an urgent campaign encouraging expectant mothers to book their pregnancies before 12 weeks.
“Every pregnancy is a journey,” ZACH emphasizes, “and most of these deaths can be prevented by booking your pregnancy early!”
Why Early Booking Matters
ZACH outlines several benefits to early antenatal care (ANC) booking, not only for mothers but also for the health and development of unborn babies.
✅ Early Risk Detection
“Early booking allows us to identify and manage potential complications like anaemia and hypertension before they escalate,” explained a ZACH representative. These are two major contributors to maternal and neonatal complications.
✅ Better Baby Development
“Starting folic acid and iron supplements early can significantly improve your baby’s growth and reduce the risk of birth defects,” said a midwife at a ZACH-affiliated facility.
✅ Infection Prevention
Timely screenings for infections like HIV, syphilis, and urinary tract infections help protect both mother and baby. “We can treat infections early and reduce the chance of transmission to the baby,” added the midwife.
✅ Personalized Care Plan
Early ANC visits provide time to develop a comprehensive care plan that includes nutrition guidance, birth preparedness, and lifestyle support.

Expectant mothers who visit ZACH clinics and affiliated health centers can access a comprehensive package of care, including:
