_"The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the demon-possessed men. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region"_ (Matt 8:33-34). It's no wonder the whole town came out to meet Jesus and hear about what had happened. We know from Mark and Luke that when they got there, they found at least one of the formerly demon-possessed men "sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and the townspeople were afraid" (Luke 8:35). Instead of being awed by Jesus' power and drawn to Him, the Gentiles were afraid. They were intimidated by power that could free men who had suffered for so long under the violent oppression of demons. The disciples may have understood that fear. Mark reports that when Jesus calmed a deadly storm with a single command earlier in the day, they too had been "filled with fear" (Mark 4:41).
They were likely angry, as well, seeing so many valuable animals lost - but when faced by such miraculous power never seen before, coupled with such great lose of valuable animals, it's reasonable for thoughts of fear and revenge to override thoughts of tolerance and hospitality. The difference between the disciples and the Gentiles from that region is that the disciples didn't leave Jesus. They learned to trust Him more.
It is believed that the economy and business plan of the region was so much dependent on the flow of visitors to the temple of Zeus Olympus. Pigs were required sacrifice on the altar in the temple of Zeus, the same supreme god of all Hellenic theology known as the "king of gods and man" which was in the region. They chose money and their god over Jesus. And Jesus was not only bad for their business, He also showed them that their supreme god didn't seem to be too supreme after all, even on his own territory. Their eyes were blinded to reality of the mercy of God upon humanity by His act of setting free the demon-possessed men.
