ZCC Launches Schools Social Work Program at Thekwane High to Tackle Youth Vulnerabilities

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has taken a bold step in strengthening youth resilience against social and migration-related risks by convening a Schools Social Work Inception Meeting at Thekwane High School in Plumtree this week.

Held under the banner of the Accelerated Ecumenical Interventions for Reduction of Risky Flight for Youth, the meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the School Chaplain and Deputy Headmaster, to lay the foundation for a transformative initiative targeting young people.

The session outlined the background and objectives of the Schools Social Work program, directly linking it to challenges faced by learners such as bullying, drug and substance abuse, mental health struggles, and exposure to risky migration. By addressing these root causes, the program aims to provide safe and supportive environments within schools.

The initiative will focus on vulnerable children, orphans, victims of bullying, perpetrators of bullying, those facing mental health difficulties, and learners struggling with drug and substance use. Support will include psychosocial counseling and, where necessary, referrals to the Multi-Disciplinary Expert Facility (MDEF) for specialized intervention.

ZCC said this milestone marks a critical step toward creating safe spaces for young people while tackling the underlying factors that push them toward irregular migration.

Through this targeted approach, the program seeks to empower learners, foster safer school communities, and build stronger pathways to positive futures.
