Church, Community Must Unite Against Drugs – Mbare Councillor Quotes Hosea 4:6

By A Correspondent

MBARÉ – Ward 11 Councillor Chabuda has called on the Church to take a frontline role in the fight against drug and substance abuse, urging a united approach that includes religious institutions, law enforcement, and the wider community.

Speaking at an Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse campaign held in Mbare today, Councillor Chabuda stressed that combating the crisis requires not only government intervention but also spiritual guidance and moral leadership from the Church.

Quoting Hosea 4:6 — “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” — he emphasised the importance of awareness, education, and faith in protecting vulnerable communities, particularly the youth.

“This is not just a social or legal issue — it’s a moral and spiritual one too,” Chabuda said. “The Church must step up and work with the police, civic organisations, and families to break the cycle of addiction and hopelessness.”

He commended local churches for their ongoing involvement, praising their collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and various NGOs to educate communities and offer counselling services to victims of drug abuse.

“The crisis is real. But through prayer, partnership, and action, we can restore lives and communities,” he added.

Chabuda also appealed to government departments, schools, and development partners to strengthen their engagement with faith-based organisations, calling for resources to be channelled into rehabilitation programmes grounded in both science and scripture.

“As a community, we must rise together — because no one is safe when our youth are being lost to drugs,” he warned.

The event was supported by several organisations, including Christian Aid, Brot für die Welt, and the World Council of Churches, reinforcing the growing role of the Church in grassroots advocacy and healing initiatives across Zimbabwe.
