Today's Lesson

 Fr. Aaron Ipsani

Acts 5:1-11: ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA

Their lie was pretending to have given all when in fact they had only given a part. Their death was an act of God, not Peter, and was evidently intended to be an example for all time of God's displeasure at the sins of greed and religious hypocrisy. God does not strike us dead every time we are guilty of them. If He did, people would be falling down dead in the churches all the time. But the incideny shows God's attitude toward a wrong heart; it is a warning, in the beginning days of the church, against using-or rather misusing - the church as a means of self-glorification. The incident, as a disciplinary example, did have an immediate salutary effect on the church (v.11).
