*UNDERSTANDING THE ACTS AND WORDS OF JESUS CHRIST (75)*

_And a scribe came up and said to Him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head"_ (Matt 8:19-20). It costs something to be Jesus' disciple; in fact, the cost may be to lose everything. There's no doubt that it cost Jesus everything. When the Church talks about the first disciples, it remembers virtually all the early apostles as martyrs - martyr is a Greek word that means witness - but the experience of the Church was that those who were faithful in witnessing to the truth accepted the consequences of that witness, even the death now we call martyrdom. So when Jesus says "The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head," He doesn't mean He's homeless, but points to the heaviness of the demands and cost of His work. The invitation to follow Him carries the risk of losing many things which we rightly hold most dear. But following Jesus is the choice for a victorious, abundant life, a life of joy. Our joy is a life of freedom without fear.

Of all people in the world, Jesus is the free-est. At the same time, in that very freedom He has taken responsibility for all of us as our servant, our protector, our model and our Savior. He leads us into the Kingdom of God where, as servants of one another we have perfect freedom. But this abundant life requires intentional living. Following Jesus is not an accidental process; it requires constant attention, constant love, and constant generosity. And there's nothing we can lose that can separate us from His love. Jesus did not want followers who were swept away by a moment of emotion, which quickly blazed and just as quickly died. He did not want men who were carried away by a tide of mere feelings, which quickly flowed and just as quickly ebbed. He wanted men who knew what they were doing. Men and women wholly given to Him. Jesus still demands full allegiance.
